Eclipse Tips

Two solar eclipses are coming up! Here are some tips:
Maps online will show you who, from Mexico to eastern Canada, will have the experience of a total eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024. Please don’t miss it if you are located on the path.

Maps online will show you who, from Oregon to Texas, will witness the moon moving fully in front of the sun, but not covering it, on Saturday, October 14, 2023

Don’t look at the sun, except when it is briefly totally covered by the moon! A method I describe below is a fun way to see partial eclipses safely.

Most of the US will see at least a partial eclipse, in October and April, and here’s my favorite way to enjoy that. It’s an activity, fun in itself, natural and safe, that you can do on any sunny day. It’s a hobby of mine.

The sun, shining through smallish holes, such as through a leafy tree, projects perfect circlular images on paper or the pavement, or on walls of buildings. Look for the circles on any sunny day! The diameters range from tiny to several inches.

It’s fun on any sunny day, but it’s REALLY fun during a partial eclipse, or before and after a total eclipse! The circles have bites out of them! If the eclipse is great enough where you are, you see crescents!

For an example, Google search "solar eclipse shadows."
